He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1969 during the Vietnam War and was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas, Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi, Fairchild AFB, Spokane, Washington, and March AFB, Riverside, California.
