India Gang Rape Outrage Intensifies

The brutal gang rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kashmir in January 2018 has sparked outrage and anger across India following Hindu right-wing groups protests over the arrest of eight Hindu men in connection with the crime.

Asifa Bano belonged to a Muslim nomadic tribe. Her body was found in a forest on 17 January near Kathua in Indian-administered Kashmir.

The arrested men include four police officers, a minor and a retired government official who belong to a local Hindu community involved in a land dispute with the Muslim nomads.

Two ministers from the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attended a rally in support of the accused men. It is this support for the accused that has brought the case to the forefront of the media as much as or even more than the event of the crime itself.
