Indian Penal Code
The Indian Penal Code (IPC) is the main criminal code of India. It covers all substantive aspects of criminal law in India and is very comprehensive. Any act considered as dangerous or damaging to citizens or to society as a whole is marked as a crime and is made punishable. IPC has many different sections and is vast in scope. Most of the criminal advocates in Delhi and indeed across India would handle most of the sections in the IPC. Indian law treats rape as a criminal offence.
The Code is widely acknowledged as being ahead of its time. It is little changed in over 150 years. Justice of Supreme Court of United Kingdom, Nicholas Phillips, applauded the efficacy and relevance of the IPC at the 150 years commemoration of the IPC. Modern crimes fit easily within the Code mainly because of the brilliance and broadness of the Code’s drafting.
