The Delhi police witnessed more than 70,000 cases of crime being reported in the national capital only till June 2014 – a phenomenal rise from the 80, 000 cases reported in the whole of 2013. Allegedly, the factors that have triggered this rise are: the booming urbanisation, socio-economic disparities, easy escape routes for the criminals to flee to neighbouring states and the growing rate of public awareness.

The Delhi police, however, noted that the positive steps taken by the police and the government in encouraging people to voice their grievances and to lodge complaints is yet another reason why there has been this shift in trend. According to the statistics maintained by the police, a total of 71,523 cases were registered under the Indian Penal Code till June 30 this year.

The year 2013 witnessed a total of 80,184 cases being registered in the Indian capital under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. The statistics from the last 3 years clearly shows a steady increase in the number of criminal cases being reported- from 51,292 in 2010 the figure rose to 53,353 and 54,287 in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

The major types of crime that have increased are robbery, dacoity, motor vehicle theft, snatching and other cases of theft. Till June 30 this year, 44 cases of dacoity were reported while in 2013, 33 such incidents were reported. In case of robbery, the first half of 2014 saw as many as 2,678 incidents reported while the less than half the number of such cases were registered in the whole of 2013.

In the aftermath of the infamous Delhi gang rape, the national capital has been in the headlines for its growing incidents of crime against women. Tagged as a city unsafe for women, there has been a significant rise in the number of rape cases reported this year. According to Delhi’s police commissioner, B.S. Bassi, a “truthful” recording of criminal cases against women is the main reason behind this striking contrast between such crimes reported last year and this year.

While the number of rape cases stood at 1,636 in the whole of 2013, 984 such cases were reported in the first 6 months of 2014. Nearly 1,980 cases of molestation have been reported till June 30 this year as opposed to a total of 3,515 such cases in 2013.
